Plague Tip #2 – Best Places to Start Your Plague

In plague, you must play to win.  That means killing EVERYONE - not six and a half billion people, everyone.   But where is the best place to start?

There are two schools of thought on this, I’ll provide you both.

1.  An island nation
Usually this means, Greenland, Iceland or Madagascar because they can be notoriously difficult to infect.  I’ll throw in New Zealand and the Caribbean as others that can seem immune from an inbound plague.  Because these regions can be so difficult to infect one strategy is to start your plague in one of the regions.   Personally, I have had the most success with Greenland and Madagascar.

2.  A poor country with a seaport and airport.
For me this usually means India.   Despite being described as a rural country, there are over a billion people to infect in India.  They have a relatively modest medical research budget, which is nice to take out when you turn the heat up to kill everyone.  With India you have the potential to spread your pathogen by air, land or sea.   This will maximize your ability to infect as many countries as possible, as fast as possible.
So which is the best country to start your plague?  INDIA

  1. My options for starting are South Africa, the trade routes attached ensure a good dispersion of a plague. South America, Brazil has good Land, Sea and Air and is poor or attached to poor countries. Egypt has two shipping routes, air, is poor and your virus is already accustomed to hot environments. I also like greenland because it is pesky and hard to infect.

    1. Saudi Arabia has planes flying to most of the continents. So thats my pick usually.

    2. I always pick Egypt. I usually have no issues, except I have to sit and wait FOREVER for Peru, Iceland, Greenland, Russia and Canada to become 100% infected. So. Boring.

    3. i usally go for russian and dont kill anybody until infect 100% population the cure gets up to roghly 30% before i start becoming deadly and by that point ive got lots of dna points

  3. i also use india a lot. particularly because it links to england which is possibly the biggest hub in the game, and also because it has a vast number of sea routes to include madagascar and proximity to islands like new zealand, philipines, australia, etc. i figure that amount of benefit is worth the extra attention and dna i have to pay for iceland and greenland. also a good tip is when you unlock unlimited disease type, you can use it to scientifically investigate strategies. for example environmental hardening alone works much faster in saturating greenland than zoonosis alone, hematophagy alone, or bioaerosol alone.

  4. I use Saudi Arabia. Access to mainland Africa and Asia, plus an airport and port.

  5. I personally am loving China. The highest population in the world gets me lots of dna points early, and it has a land connection to India, Russia and the Middle East, with ports to most of the South East Asian countries. The main problem I have with this strategy, though, is infecting North Africa, and sometimes Greenland and Canada.

    1. agreed. morocco makes me so mad at times. and central africa sometimes too

    2. I have no problems with China but Suadi Arabia is very good too,I won all but bio-weapon on brutal,no genes

    3. I had success with starting in Egypt, Afghanistan, China, Russia, Australia, UK, and South Africa.

The most advisable is South Africa because it helped me infect Madagascar early on Virus and Parasite Brutal difficulty.

China is also a good place to start because in Hong Kong there are a hell load of planes flying in and out.

Russia also has a lot of people and a lot of countries surrounding it.

Afghanistan is a very poor country increasing the chance of infection and death. I beat this also with Virus and Parasite Brutal Difficulty

  6. My goal is to ensure the Northern Border is safe, secure and allows for the free flow of travel and commerce.

  7. I like Egypt. It has ports to America, India, The UK, South Africa, and Spain. It also has an airport, 80,000,000 people, land connections to hot, urban countries, and is rather poor. I am going to need a lot of convincing to stop using Egypt.

  8. Indionesia seems to be a good start for me, except with fungus. India is a defo winner however. Sometimes I like to try USA, just cos it feels like its justified :-D

  9. I always start in Brazil. They have land and sea, and are attached to several other poor countries. Other favorites are Russia and Greenland.

  10. My first game ever I won from Greenland, but I have really started to love UK. It is "cold" and with my Xerophile gene I get both extremes covered. It also has lots of air and sea access, not to mention the London Olympics causes instead spread to every region at once. The only problem is getting started in a rich country with so much medical coverage.

  11. I prefer starting from China, without evolving any symptoms. When the whole China is infected I start uprgading all the transmissions and from there on it hapens fast.

  12. I've went thru and played all 7 plagues casual, normal, and brutal. tried many places to start each plague, EGYPT, everytime I start in EGYPT I always have better luck, a small narrow channel with two seaports and an airport, plus they're poor with terrible medical qualities, easy ship transmission to Iceland, Norway, Madagascar, new Zealand, USA, Canada, China, and eventually Greenland (remember Greenland only has one seaport), pretty much everywhere. just start with level 1 insect, water, and livestock, not necessarily in that order, and then u should be good to go from there in virtually every plague and difficulty.

  13. Egypt or Greenland - no other choice

So you have the hottest and the coldest country and only have to evolve 1 resistance - egypt has 2 Sea and 1 airport and is poor - greenland is one of the hardest countries to infect (canada is harder, but to start there is isane...)

    1. lol i acidentialy started in canada it was a bit harder but once it got going it was over. also as you said colder country only had to worry about heat (sort) :P

  14. Start in Canada and take those bastards out early. It's slow to spread but if you get mutation going you get lots of points early in the game. It's an incubator.

  15. U.K. for me since ive started starting the game there i have not lost. just have to keep symptoms in check.

  16. Iceland is great for virus on both brutal and normal. I infected and killed everyone in under two years. DNA Instability becomes your best friend. :)

  17. I use the US a lot because it has the most imports/exports of both sea and air. You usually have a good start if you start there and buy the boosts in this order: insomnia (symptom), water1 (transmission), paranoia (symptom; so they stay unaware longer), drug resistance1 (ability), bird1 (transmission) then just go on as you usually would

    ReplyDelete
  18. i find west africa the best place 'cus i dont add any symtoms until the world is completly infected then i require
tons of DNA to KILLL anything and everything

    ReplyDelete
  19. I like starting in the UK it takes a while to get up and running but after words it has planes and boats leaving to all the major country's like USA, China, Russia and Australia making it spread all over the globe fast. Is this a good idea?

    ReplyDelete
  20. I always start at New Guinea

    ReplyDelete
  21. I like starting from either India or central africa, because from there it travels by land to west africa, South Africa, and the middle east where it can get to lots of ports, and even then it can still get to the rest of Eurasia by land

    ReplyDelete
  22. Btw I try to not have any symptoms and only upgrade the transmission and abilities until the majority of the world is infected, then when I have enough money I upgrade the symptoms to make them start killing
That way, research starts late and goes slow while my disease infects fast and kills

    ReplyDelete
  23. I love to start in Brazil. India is also very good. I tend to do good with both countries so I agree with this post.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I start with USA all the way. First ability to purchase after that is drug resistance. Then make it airborne and water borne. once the disease takes hold in the US the sheer number of flights spreads it far and wide.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I've been having a lot of success with Germany as a starting point. I picked it for the same reasons some people like starting with the US- taking out first-world countries hits a lot of research. Germany has an airport, and a seaport, and your plaque can spread by land throughout Asia and Africa as well. I will intentionally delay drug resistance in some games, that way the plague increases slowly in Germany while spreading faster in the poorer countries in Eastern Europe and Asia. That increases the amount of people it can infect before it is detected, because detection occurs when your disease reaches a certain percentage of the population in a given country (depending on severity.)

    ReplyDelete
  26. I generally start with Russia. It has both a seaport and an airport. I often don't spend DNA points for cold resistance, and every time I start with them, i didn't need to worry about Iceland and Gronland. My nemesis was New Zealand. In the bioweapon level, central african nations is a pain though.

  27. I like starting in different countries, as a challenge. I started my prion round in UK, cause I wanted to emulate the spread of BSE back in the 80s/90s, and my virus came out of Africa like Ebola and HIV. Try a new country each time!

  28. Jules that is inspired. After reading your comment I took my first crack at Viral, and since I had just unlocked the Xerophile code I first searched online for desert viruses. Voila, up came an interesting, readable and witty blog article by one Abbie Smith about the Eilat Virus. It was collected in the Negev Desert of Israel 30 years ago but only examined recently, and may have potential as an alphavirus vaccine for humans. So I started as Eilat Virus in the Middle East (which previously I had not even considered) and won! (OK, it was Normal difficulty but I’m a beginner).

I’m looking forward to my next game as the fungus Saprolegnia parasitica, which I will start in the the USA.

    Thanks for the idea!

    1. For Jules and Eric's Comments, I had thought at one point about looking up some of the historical outbreaks and using this just to see a comparison. Got a few unlocks under my belt now so I think I have a good enough feel to give it a go. This should prove both interesting and enjoyable!

  30. the best place to start is saudi arabia or india for most types of plagues (bacteria, virus, etc.) then you do some drug resistance, that choose the following transmissions: water, birds, blood, then air, in that order. this works best for bacteria. for fungus start in greenland or madagascar then use fungal burst.

  31. I found the the best place to start by far is Russia. It has connections to Greenland and Canada. These two places are wealthy and hard to infect. Then I use the infect all strategy and I win almost every time.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Central America has been great for me. Lots of distribution via sea (Panama Canal) spreads to every continent rapidly and gets Greenland fairly quick via Russia.

    ReplyDelete
  33. In my opinion, China is the best starting place for the plague. Why?
    1. Its high population offers plenty of dna points when it is completely infected.
    2. it has an airport and seaport that can lead to places like Russia (which leads to Greenland), US (which leads to Caribbean), Saudi Arabia (which leads to Madagascar), plenty of other plane/boat transmission, as well as a massive amount of countries that surround it that spread by land transmission.
    3. It is a high density, urban country. Coughing is the most infectious tier 1 symptom and is almost undetectable (detectable by riots). Moreover, coughing has an increased effect in China, making the most infectious tier 1 symptom even more infectious.
    4. It has a balanced climate and makes extremophile an ideal gene to use
    5. It is not a rich country, but has the cure budget of one.
    6. It is an urban country. Most rich counties are urban as well. Evolving rodent 1 will significantly help transmission in China and rich countries which already are hard to infect.

  34. Recently, I've been starting in the UK because of it's global position as an air hub. Admittedly, you need to boost the drug resistance much sooner, but once your plague takes hold, it spreads like wildfire and you'll soon see red lines tracking planes going to the 4 corners!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Well, there are many places that you could start it in. My personal favorites are as follows:

    1. India (It hastily infects a huge chunck of the overall population and spreads it to China, which also has a huge population. In addition, it has sea roots to Australia and Afria, spreading it fairly far.

    2. South Africa (It has great sea roots, including India, Europe, and South America. Also, it spreads to Central Africa, Botswana, and Zimbabwe.)

    3. Central Africa (Generally, I don't like this because it has no seaports or airports. However, I like that is spreads to surrounding African countries. By the way, this is my friend's favorite because of the spreading by land.)

I've also seen people use the United Kingdom, China, and island nation such as Greenland, Madagascar, Iceland, and rarely . . . the Caribbean and New Zealand because they're hard to infect and they just start it there to avoid never infecting them.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I've had great successes with Egypt and Australia.
    1- Egypt cos of:
    a. the two sea ports one heading to Europe and the other towards Asia, b. it's got an airport
    c. many neighbouring countries around in Africa and towards Middle East

    2- Australia
    a. international sea and air hub making plague very infectious
    b. close to New Zealand, one of the 'pesky countries'
    c. need to upgrade drug resistance is counter-balanced infectivity levels that are sky high (especially when starting with hot climate resistance genes, if/when unlocked)

    happy gaming lads!!

  37. I personally think the best place may be Norway or Russia. Watch Greenland closely. They rarely take in boats normally, but when they do, they come from Russia, Iceland, or Norway. Russia and Norway have land routes around. I once started in Greenland and they were already working for a cure before my disease left the country.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I like to start in Iceland because its notoriously hard to infect but it has sea and air ports that consistently go to the UK, Japan, the US, and from there it spreads quite well, however Angola, Botswana, and Zimbabwe seem harder to infect after starting on Iceland.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Egypt, I tried a handful, I get the best success rate starting here. Always use water transmission 1 and 2, antibiotic and cold resistance to ensure infection of greenland, and simptoms which make rich nations susceptible are a plus. Good luck!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Does anyone have the best country from nanovirus since you are known from the beginning and have to go really fast?

    ReplyDelete
  41. used Saudi Arabia for the first 2 levels, which is nice BC it is basically the hub of the Old World. On Fungus, I chose Indonesia. Infecting the hard ones first is bull. It is near impossible to spread if they are an island and no airport. The better strategy is to keep it as inconspicuous as possible, devolving traits, until you have 99% infected, then unleash with immediate organ failure and coma

  42. May I suggest that the plague starts in Africa's poor regions (usually the West, Central and East Africas)? Their areas are so economically disadvantaged that research can't be funded so well.
