Plague Tip #2 – Best Places to Start Your Plague

In plague, you must play to win.  That means killing EVERYONE - not six and a half billion people, everyone.   But where is the best place to start?

There are two schools of thought on this, I’ll provide you both.

1.  An island nation
Usually this means, Greenland, Iceland or Madagascar because they can be notoriously difficult to infect.  I’ll throw in New Zealand and the Caribbean as others that can seem immune from an inbound plague.  Because these regions can be so difficult to infect one strategy is to start your plague in one of the regions.   Personally, I have had the most success with Greenland and Madagascar.

2.  A poor country with a seaport and airport.
For me this usually means India.   Despite being described as a rural country, there are over a billion people to infect in India.  They have a relatively modest medical research budget, which is nice to take out when you turn the heat up to kill everyone.  With India you have the potential to spread your pathogen by air, land or sea.   This will maximize your ability to infect as many countries as possible, as fast as possible.
So which is the best country to start your plague?  INDIA

  1. My options for starting are South Africa, the trade routes attached ensure a good dispersion of a plague. South America, Brazil has good Land, Sea and Air and is poor or attached to poor countries. Egypt has two shipping routes, air, is poor and your virus is already accustomed to hot environments. I also like greenland because it is pesky and hard to infect.

    1. Saudi Arabia has planes flying to most of the continents. So thats my pick usually.

  3. i also use india a lot. particularly because it links to england which is possibly the biggest hub in the game, and also because it has a vast number of sea routes to include madagascar and proximity to islands like new zealand, philipines, australia, etc. i figure that amount of benefit is worth the extra attention and dna i have to pay for iceland and greenland. also a good tip is when you unlock unlimited disease type, you can use it to scientifically investigate strategies. for example environmental hardening alone works much faster in saturating greenland than zoonosis alone, hematophagy alone, or bioaerosol alone.

  4. I use Saudi Arabia. Access to mainland Africa and Asia, plus an airport and port.

  5. I personally am loving China. The highest population in the world gets me lots of dna points early, and it has a land connection to India, Russia and the Middle East, with ports to most of the South East Asian countries. The main problem I have with this strategy, though, is infecting North Africa, and sometimes Greenland and Canada.

  6. My goal is to ensure the Northern Border is safe, secure and allows for the free flow of travel and commerce.

  7. I like Egypt. It has ports to America, India, The UK, South Africa, and Spain. It also has an airport, 80,000,000 people, land connections to hot, urban countries, and is rather poor. I am going to need a lot of convincing to stop using Egypt.

  8. Indionesia seems to be a good start for me, except with fungus. India is a defo winner however. Sometimes I like to try USA, just cos it feels like its justified :-D

  9. I always start in Brazil. They have land and sea, and are attached to several other poor countries. Other favorites are Russia and Greenland.

  10. My first game ever I won from Greenland, but I have really started to love UK. It is "cold" and with my Xerophile gene I get both extremes covered. It also has lots of air and sea access, not to mention the London Olympics causes instead spread to every region at once. The only problem is getting started in a rich country with so much medical coverage.

  11. I prefer starting from China, without evolving any symptoms. When the whole China is infected I start uprgading all the transmissions and from there on it hapens fast.

  12. I've went thru and played all 7 plagues casual, normal, and brutal. tried many places to start each plague, EGYPT, everytime I start in EGYPT I always have better luck, a small narrow channel with two seaports and an airport, plus they're poor with terrible medical qualities, easy ship transmission to Iceland, Norway, Madagascar, new Zealand, USA, Canada, China, and eventually Greenland (remember Greenland only has one seaport), pretty much everywhere. just start with level 1 insect, water, and livestock, not necessarily in that order, and then u should be good to go from there in virtually every plague and difficulty.

  13. Egypt or Greenland - no other choice

So you have the hottest and the coldest country and only have to evolve 1 resistance - egypt has 2 Sea and 1 airport and is poor - greenland is one of the hardest countries to infect (canada is harder, but to start there is isane...)

    1. lol i acidentialy started in canada it was a bit harder but once it got going it was over. also as you said colder country only had to worry about heat (sort) :P

  14. Start in Canada and take those bastards out early. It's slow to spread but if you get mutation going you get lots of points early in the game. It's an incubator.

  15. U.K. for me since ive started starting the game there i have not lost. just have to keep symptoms in check.

  16. Iceland is great for virus on both brutal and normal. I infected and killed everyone in under two years. DNA Instability becomes your best friend. :)

  17. I use the US a lot because it has the most imports/exports of both sea and air. You usually have a good start if you start there and buy the boosts in this order: insomnia (symptom), water1 (transmission), paranoia (symptom; so they stay unaware longer), drug resistance1 (ability), bird1 (transmission) then just go on as you usually would

  18. i find west africa the best place 'cus i dont add any symtoms until the world is completly infected then i require
tons of DNA to KILLL anything and everything

  19. I like starting in the UK it takes a while to get up and running but after words it has planes and boats leaving to all the major country's like USA, China, Russia and Australia making it spread all over the globe fast. Is this a good idea?

  20. I always start at New Guinea

  21. I like starting from either India or central africa, because from there it travels by land to west africa, South Africa, and the middle east where it can get to lots of ports, and even then it can still get to the rest of Eurasia by land

  22. Btw I try to not have any symptoms and only upgrade the transmission and abilities until the majority of the world is infected, then when I have enough money I upgrade the symptoms to make them start killing
That way, research starts late and goes slow while my disease infects fast and kills

  23. I love to start in Brazil. India is also very good. I tend to do good with both countries so I agree with this post.
